MATERIALS FOR THE "TWO TUNES FROM FIDDLER WARD JARVIS" WORKSHOP AT AMERICAN BANJO CAMP

Fiddler and banjo player Ward Jarvis, born in 1894, moved from Calhoun Co, WV to Athens County, Ohio (where I live) in the late 1940s to work in the timber industry. When I was in high school and college, I used to visit him in his little house in New England, Ohio. I still remember the red-hot coal stove in the middle of the room, with Ward in his thermal long johns and flannel shirt. He'd always be reluctant to get out his fiddle and play, but would eventually be persuaded. I still remember how nice he was to me as a beginning banjo player fumbling my way through his tunes.
